The Philippine Air Force acquires sophisticated fixed wing jets that can function as “air command posts” for government and military ranking officials in times of emergency.
The P2-billion Gulfstream G280 aircraft is estimated to be around August 2020, spokesman for Defense Director Arsenio Andolong.
“The G280 will primarily function as a platform to bring our senior leaders and commanders in, for example, crisis situations. This can be used by the chief of staff, the Secretary of National Defense, our main service commander and the President, “he said.
“Even though you want to use the term lightly or loosely, it is similar to a command post that airs. That will serve that purpose, he added.
Gulfstream said in a news release last week that the Philippine government recently signed a contract through the US government to buy the G280, including its parts, tools and contractor logistical support.
The G280 has a maximum range of 3,600 nautical miles / 6,667 kilometers at a Mach 0.80 long cruising speed and Mach 0.84 high speed cruising, Gulfstream said.
The aircraft can fly eight hours nonstop and can connect Dubai to Hong Kong; Singapore to Melbourne, Australia; or Singapore to Dubai.
This can also be used for VIP transportation; command and control; air early warning; medical evacuation; high altitude atmospheric research; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana approved the plan to purchase the aircraft on November 29 last year. It was obtained from the US through the Foreign Military Funding Program.
The aging Fokker F-28, which is expected to be replaced by Gulfstream G280, is currently undergoing treatment in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Air Force also expects the arrival of medium-sized air transport Airbus Defense & Space C-295 this year, which was purchased at a price of P1.8 billion. It will also function as a command and control aircraft.
“It has a longer range. This is suitable for maritime patrol missions as well as for transporting supplies and troops, “Andolong said.
