Today was my first checkout flight to Data Dawai, which is a small village in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the Island of Borneo.
As Captain’s flying here there are certain runways, (usually those with a combination of a challenging runway surrounded by mountainous terrain and frequently bad weather) that require us to be “checked out” by another captain who is already checked out there. Only once this is completed can we operate in and out of there on our own with a First Officer. This process involves at least 3 take-offs and landings, preferably covering operations on both runways, which can sometimes take several weeks depending on the time of year. This procedure, along with many others, is what keeps us safe flying in the hazardous aviation environment that is Indonesia.
